In the wake of
the coup attempt and the disturbances which shook
Venezuela between 11 and 14 April, an Amnesty
International delegation is set to visit the
country from 30 April to 3 May.
The delegation, comprising Rupert Knox, Researcher
on Venezuela, Susan Lee, Director of the Americas
Program, and Sergio Zamorano, Development
Coordinator for the Americas Program, will hold
meetings with government representatives and non-governmental
human rights organizations.
"We urge the Venezuelan government to investigate
the reports of human rights violations committed
during the recent disturbances, and to identify
and to bring those responsible to justice, in
accordance with international standards for fair
trial, and within the framework of the Venezuelan
Constitution", the delegates said.
"We also hope to begin a constructive dialogue
with the Venezuelan authorities about the
promotion and protection of human rights in the
country".
